Protect and Restore Your Teeth
Dental Crowns St. Joseph
Even patients with good oral hygiene habits sometimes experience instances of tooth decay or damage. When a single tooth is compromised it is important to respond quickly to prevent the issue from spreading to the surrounding teeth and gums. At Mark Bagby DDS Family Dentistry, our number one goal is to maintain our patients’ oral health. We offer dental crowns to our St. Joseph and Kansas City patients as a safe, effective way to eliminate decay and restore strength to the teeth. Crowns can solve a number of oral-health related issues, while providing an aesthetically-pleasing look. What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are prosthetics, or caps, that are placed over an entire tooth to preserve the remaining tooth structure and prevent further decay. They can be used when a patient has a severe cavity, a chipped or severely damaged tooth, or has received dental implants or bridges. This restorative dentistry option is often used when a simple dental filling will not suffice, or when a patient is concerned about the appearance of large fillings. Crowns are typically made of a porcelain material that is not only strong and durable, but provides a look that is similar to a patient’s natural teeth. Once placed, dental crowns can last for several years and do not require any specialized care.
Receiving Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be fitted and placed for patients in two visits to our St. Joseph or Kansas City office. During the first visit, Dr. Bagby will thoroughly examine the affected tooth or teeth, as well as the surrounding bone and gums. This will include a series of X-rays, as well as the removal of any existing decayed material. Dr. Bagby may also remove some tooth material in order to make room for the dental crown. Once this is complete, he will take impressions of the teeth to get an accurate idea of the structures of the mouth. These impressions will be sent to a dental lab and referenced in the creation of the final crown. In the meantime, typically about 2 to 3 weeks, a patient will wear a temporary crown.
Once Dr. Bagby has received the final restoration, the patient can return to his office for the final step of the procedure. During this second appointment, the crown will be placed over the tooth and bonded into place using special dental cement. Dr. Bagby will then make any necessary adjustments to the size and shape of the crown so that it fits seamlessly with the rest of the teeth, and allows for a comfortable bite.
